Company of the Month | April | Jacobs

This month we are proud to present Jacobs as the Company of the Month. Jacobs provides a wide range of services, including all aspects of architecture, engineering and construction, operations and maintenance, as well as scientific and specialty consulting. As of this year, Jacobs is established in The Hague, moving over 1000 employees from Leiden. We spoke with the VP Operations of Jacobs Netherlands, Mr. Jelle Nederstigt, about the presence of Jacobs in The Hague.

Jacobs met bord

For those who are unfamiliar with Jacobs, can you tell us a bit more about your company?
“Jacobs is one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of technical, professional and construction services. We currently employ 54,000 people around the world; engineers, project managers, procurement specialists, architects, construction managers, safety experts, energy transition consultants. Our client base is as diverse as our talent pool. We serve companies in various sectors from Aerospace to Building & Infrastructure, Life Sciences and Petrochemicals.”

Jacobs moved from Leiden to The Hague. What was the main motivation?
“During our search for a new office we came across this building in the Hague. It fully meets our requirements in terms of size and sustainability performance. The location of the property is also convenient. It is closer to our local customers, for most employees also closer to home and with excellent public transportation connectivity.”

What has been the overall reaction amongst the 1000 employees, and do you think the personnel will feel at home in The Hague?
“Of course they had many questions at the start, but our employees have been generally very supportive towards this move and quickly found their way in the area. Our old office needed a renovation and many people were looking forward to working in a modern building, designed for the way we work, with ‘scrum rooms’ and many other facilities to stimulate collaboration within our organization and with clients. In the past three months we have received mainly positive feedback to this change.”

In February, Jacobs was named one of the most admired companies in the world by Fortune, ranked #3 in the Engineering & Construction category. Your company is well known for its continued commitment to sustainability. How does the new location contribute to the company’s dedication to the advancement of sustainable services for your clients and within your own company?”

“Well, we can proudly say that this is the first renovated building in the Netherlands which has been LEED Platinum certified, meaning it is resource efficient, using less water and energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. More importantly, and leading to larger sustainability gains, are our experts. In 2016 our employees around the globe helped clients save 54.2 million metric tons of CO2 and our Consultancy team supports clients around the globe to prepare for the energy transition.”

The city of The Hague is known for its strong Energy cluster, hosting the headquarters of some key players in the industry. Do you foresee new partnerships as the result of your presence in The Hague?
“We have a long standing relationship with many of the key players located in the Energy and Oil & Gas sectors. The fact that we are now so close to their headquarters will of course facilitate cooperation and deepen those relationships.”

Your office is next to the office of Siemens, another large multinational. Will you be partnering up and if so on what front?
“Yes, Siemens is our new neighbor and we actually rent our new building from them.  Siemens’ and Jacobs’ services are complementary and we regularly work together on projects. It is an important business partner and we already see early signs of enhanced cooperation in several ways now that we are located close to each other.”
