Pauline Krikke put forward as new Mayor of The Hague

The Hague Municipal Council voted on 6 February to make Pauline Krikke the official candidate to replace Jozias van Aartsen as mayor of The Hague.

The Municipal Council sees Krikke (1961) as a strong leader who unifies people and has a heart for the big city. She has extensive managerial experience in governing a big city: for 5 years she served as a (VVD) alderman in Amsterdam and for 12 years as mayor of Arnhem. Krikke is currently a senator in the Eerste Kamer, a position from which she will step down when she is named mayor of The Hague. This is the first time The Hague has chosen a female mayor.

Jozias van Aartsen served 9 years as mayor of The Hague. He announced at the end of 2016 that he would leave office as of 1 March. At the end of the year he will turn 70 at which point he would be required to step down.

The new mayor will be sworn in on 17 March.
