The Hague to become circular city

Saving and reusing construction materials for maintenance, renovation or demolition while at the same time creating employment opportunities for people. The Municipality of The Hague has joined the Dutch State and a number of (building) partners in The Hague to make both goals a reality. The municipality and the parties in The Hague will put forward concrete building projects which can be built in the circular economy. This joint agreement makes The Hague a ‘Circular City’.

According to Deputy Mayor Joris Wijsmuller (Urban Development and Sustainability), ‘There are still too few practical examples of circular construction. You need to make agreements in advance with all the building partners in a project, then learn a lesson from your experiences and next time do it better together. This is tough if you are always working with different partners. The Circular City approach brings together leaders in the building chain which aim to build in the circular economy. Together we are going to show that it works.’

A concrete example of a circular approach is the new garbage and recycling station on the Uitenhagestraat (Transvaal). The building is constructed from all kinds of materials which were originally from other buildings or were leftovers. The slabs in the façade, for example, originate from the former DAF factory.
