BLOG: The Hague global Telecom Capital

Recently I visited the GSMA M360 Series Privacy & Security event hosted on May 10 & 11 in The Hague. It was GSMA’s first event to take place in The Hague the City of Peace & Justice. A city considered as the Telecom Capital of the Netherlands by the historical presences of the largest Telecom operator in the Netherlands T-Mobile & KPN.

I don’t think GSMA needs an extensive introduction as it is the global authority for companies active in IT, telecom, mobile and software development or what is connected to the cloud. For several consecutive years I have been attending GSMA’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, learning about the latest Mobile developments and talking to dozens of innovative Tech companies. With The Hague as a first time GSMA host, the Privacy & Security topic is the newest addition to their M360 Series events portfolio.

For two days The Hague was the global hot spot for Mobile & Security with interesting keynotes, panel discussions, workshops, technology showcases and network opportunities. This event specifically focused on addressing issues and developments related to data storage & accessibility, data protection & authentication, electronic ID, mobile payments, user privacy and how to protect critical infrastructures against cyberattacks.

Apart from the industry leaders there were also several innovative start-ups from The Hague such as OneGini and WeAware+ showcasing their innovative IT solutions. OneGini, a mobile security app developer, collaborated with KPMG during a 36 hour hack-a-thon creating a mobile payment application with digital identification. Start-up WeAware+ provides Virtual Reality training courses and consultancy to governments, law enforcers and citizens to help improve overall community safety in residential areas. It has a digital platform for neighborhood watch & prevention teams to stimulate social participation and for threat prevention.

As an international promoter for WestHolland and the Dutch IT & Tech Market, the acquisition of a GSMA event in The Hague confirms once more that The Hague has a lot to offer for IT, Tech & Mobile companies. Over the years, the telco’s, knowledge institutes and government created and invested in the foundation for what is now considered one of the most advanced telecommunications infrastructures in the Europe. Add to this The Hague’s fast growing international cyber security cluster The Hague Security Delta, and you can understand why GSMA chose The Hague for hosting the new M360 series on Privacy & Security.

I was delighted to see that by hosting this event, industry leaders from over the world representing corporate’s like Huawei, Telefonica, AT&T, Accenture, Nokia & Kaspersky Lab came here to discuss and learn about the global IT opportunities and challenges. For one week The Hague was the Global Telecom Capital of the World.

Today the next exciting IT event, Impact Start-Up is taking place in The Hague. The event hosts international start-ups and smart innovations that create a positive impact and tackle global challenges with innovative technologies. Top speakers: Indy Johar (Co-Founder of 00), Illac Diaz (Liter of Light Movement). Impact Start-up Fest is part of StartupFest Europe which will take place in 14 different locations in The Netherlands from 24 – 28  May.
