Upcoming Chinese New Year Festival in The Hague

On Saturday, 13 February 2016 the centre of The Hague will come alive with the excitement, sounds of fireworks and bold colours of the Chinese New Year Festival.

To kick off the Year of the Monkey, 2 large-scale celebrations of the Chinese New Year will take place in The Hague: the national celebrations in and around The Hague City Hall and the local celebrations in The Hague’s Chinatown neighbourhood. Both events are free of charge and open to the public.

City Hall
The Dutch national celebrations of the Chinese New Year will be held from 11.00 to 17.00 hrs. on 13 February in and around The Hague City Hall.

After the fireworks on the Spuiplein the colourful cast of characters will then return to City Hall with an opening ceremony during which a dragon and lion will be ritually awakened and artists from China will provide entertainment.

The afternoon will be filled with Chinese dance, music, acrobatics and exhibitions of different forms of martial arts. There will also be a small Chinese market and a variety of cultural activities on offer.

The 2016 Chinese New Year will be organised by the Chinese Cultural Events Foundation in the Netherlands, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Netherlands, the Municipality of The Hague, Vereniging Nederland-China and Jiahe Shengde B.V.

Please visit the website of the Chinese Cultural Events Foundation for more information about the day’s events.

Chinatown
Local businesses in Chinatown are sponsoring a separate celebration especially for The Hague starting with an opening ceremony at 13.00 hrs. on the Gedempte Burgwal followed by a parade with fireworks through Chinatown from 13.30 to 18.00 hrs. The parade will depart from 2 locations: the Gedempte Burgwal and the Chinese gates on the Wagenstraat.

There will also be a Chinese New Year’s market and Asian food court organised on the Rabbijn Maarsenplein and Q-park Bijenkorf from 11.00 to 18.00 hrs. with all kinds of performances.

What started out as a small celebration organised by Chinese businesses 20 years ago has turned into an annual event attracting more than 20,000 visitors. The Chinese New Year Festival foundation works closely with Chinese companies, clubs and the General Chinese Wu Shu Dragon & Liondance Federation to promote Chinese culture and ensure that it’s carried on by future generations.
