Company of the Year | Huawei Netherlands

2015 marked the 10th anniversary of Huawei’s presence in the Netherlands, a milestone that was recently celebrated in grand fashion with customers, long time partners, employees and people who have supported Huawei over the past decade. Since 2005, the company has grown from 4 to 650 employees, making it the largest Chinese employer in The Netherlands.

Smart City The Hague
Earlier this year, Huawei and the City of The Hague signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in order to make The Hague a ‘Smart City’. This 1-year agreement aims to develop ways to stimulate the local economy, improve quality of life and ensure sustainability in the city. By reducing its CO2 emissions by 10% every year, the company has underlined its commitment to a longstanding and durable establishment in the Greater The Hague Region. According to Huawei, The Hague offers a favourable climate for innovation, a strong existing ICT cluster of businesses and access to a highly educated, multilingual workforce. Huawei eyes to further digitalize The Netherlands by means of innovative communication solutions.

The knowledge and potential of the IT sector in the Greater The Hague region enables our ambition to provide innovative services to educational institutes, public healthcare, energy management, mobility and public space”, said Ingrid van Engelshoven, Vice Mayor of The Hague, after signing the MoU with Huawei.

During its anniversary, Huawei announced it will select 100 students from Dutch universities over the upcoming 5 years to join the company on its educational trips to China. In China, the students will receive hands-on experience and gain new ICT expertise at Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen in order to guarantee sufficient availability of ICT knowledge in the Netherlands in future times. In 2014, The City of The Hague and Shenzhen already became official partnering cities in the field of Economy, Education and Tourism.

About Huawei
Established in 1988, the company’s initial focus was on corporate telephone systems and GSM technology. In 2005, the company entered the Dutch market after signing a contract with Telfort for providing 3G network, a network that is currently serviced by KPN. Seemingly unknown among the general public at its time of arrival, Huawei has become a household name in a matter of years.

Huawei currently operates three establishments in Voorburg, Amsterdam and Amstelveen and aims to steadily grow for the next years by launching joint initiatives such as the Joint Innovation Center together with KPN and the Seeds for the Future program with the University of Amsterdam. The company’s engagement in various cooperative initiatives with, for example, The Netherlands Asia Honours Summer School (NAHSS) and The Hague University makes Huawei the classic example of the successful encapsulation of a foreign enterprise in the WestHolland region.

Earlier this year, the Headquarters of Huawei were visited by Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Marleen Zuijderhoudt, during which the Prime Minister stressed the importance of Huawei in the digitalization of The Netherlands.

Arthur Steenmeijer (General Manager of WFIA) who represented The WestHolland Foreign Investment Agency on behalf of Marleen Zuiderhoudt (Executive Director of WFIA), was one of the hundreds of business contacts present at the anniversary. He stressed that the WFIA aspires to prolong and strengthen its relationship with Huawei and is looking forward to the next 10 years of Huawei in The Netherlands.
