Innovative Mauritshuis: tech frontrunner in art world

On June 30th, an exclusive behind the scenes event was organized for representatives of international companies from our region. The goal was to get an insight into what kind of forensic techniques and new investigation methods were used in the examination of Rembrandt’s painting of Saul & David.

Since 2007 the painting has been meticulously restored and in many ways the preliminary research resembled a Crime Scene Investigation. After introductions from Boudewijn Koopmans (Mauritshuis) and Joris den Bruinen (HSD), scientific experts demonstrated how they had worked together with the museum and international technological companies on developing new innovations for the art world.

Professor Joris Dik explained how TU Delft and Mauritshuis had worked together with medical devices company Bruker in developing a new scanning method to find hidden traces in paintings, using X-ray technology. Subsequently, PhD candidate Willemijn Elkhuizen clarified how she had joined forces with the museum and Océ printer technology to create perfect 3D reproductions of 17th century art.

csi mauritshuisDuring the tour around the exhibition, it became clear that the presentations had undoubtedly inspired the participants, who, based on their own portfolios, came up with all sorts of new possible applications to be used in arts. Clearly the museum has made its mark in the international art world as an innovative frontrunner, working with principal scientists and leading technology firms.
